Freelance Success began its life as a one day workshop way back in 1994 - at the time it was called Freelance Survival, which was much more
indicative of where Monica was at! Since then it has grown and evolved with the times, and we've always talked to students about what they need. A
few of them have been kind enough to let us reproduce their testimonials. All of the following comments are completely genuine, even the last one...
“After working on a nice, comfy, safe contract for the last 9 months, I managed to break out and get a new
freelance client a couple of weeks ago. It was pretty basic work - turning some drab financial documents into
readable, pretty ones - but since then they've asked me to be their document writer/ formatter/ troubleshooter on
a regular basis. My first ongoing client! I remember that the phrase ‘ongoing clients’ was on the list of goals that I
wrote in the first
Freelance Success session.
“I'm sure you'll be interested (and possibly a little disturbed) to know that throughout the whole tendering,
production and invoicing process, I had your voice in my head saying, ‘turn up on time!’, ‘sell yourself!’, ‘be
professional!’, ‘first quote should be too high!’, ‘over-deliver!’ I'm sure that by following Monica's Mental
Monologue, I managed to impress my client more than I would have otherwise. Thank you!”
Shelley Stocken, journalist.
"Freelance Success is an absolute MUST course for anyone to take who is serious about running a successful
business. Monica will not only stagger you with her incredible knowledge (and NO ONE else offers this
information), but she will also keep you highly entertained every step of the way - even during the unavoidable
‘tax talk’! I've never seen anyone make the financial side sound so easy. Want to make a success of your
freelancing? Take this course!"
- Mirren Lee, creative coach, producer, performer.
“This is seriously the best crash course into freelancing and the stuff involved that I could ever have stumbled
on. It’s 100% relevant to a number of creative professions and provides you with the knowledge, information,
and best of all – confidence – necessary to get started in a freelance career. Monica delivers information in a
fun and quirky way (even TAX was a little bit fun!) and gives her class every opportunity to ask questions and
engage in mutually beneficial discussion.
"To sum up, I came out of this class feeling absolutely confident that I WILL be able to make a living, and that
there are endless possibilities for talented creatives like us!”
- Cath Hughes, graphic designer, Phase Creative.
“I have been a freelance writer in the Australian film, television and publishing industry for over ten years and
really thought I knew it all. Then I attended
Freelance Success course and realised that this invaluable
workshop could help me extend and capitalise on my current practice.
“Filled with freelancers from all areas, the environment was fantastic, supportive and informative. The nuts and
bolts delivery and Monica’s natural charisma added to the value of the experience.
“Since attending Monica’s course I have moved into other diverse areas of creative practice, but have found
the information I gained in
Freelance Success has been useful in every area.
"I wholeheartedly recommend
Freelance Success for anyone at any point in their freelance career."
- Gabiann Marin, writer, Tell Tales Script and Story Development.
“I want to say thank you so much for the class. I came away from your workshop feeling inspired and motivated,
and with a whole lot of new knowledge thanks to your teaching style. I have so much admiration for what you
have achieved in terms of your business and the person you are... Consequently I’ve been referring heaps of
people to your course, so if you get a heap of web designer nerds booking into your next workshop I might be
able to shoulder a bit of the blame… Thanks again for a brilliant workshop.”
- Briar Hayward, New Media Producer.
“Ah, the dream of making a living doing something you love! Through many years of working to build diverse
skills as a teacher and part time artist I often wondered whether the two could be combined and still allow me to
pay the mortgage.
Freelance Success is designed to give a practical outline to setting up a business in the arts.
“Monica understands this process because she works in the field herself and has been delivering the course to
artists like me as well as filmmakers, musicians, actors, graphic artists and the like for more than ten years.
“The delivery is creative and to the point, a far cry from the dry tone of previous business talks I have attended.
As well as giving me a glow by identifying what I had already achieved and how it could be used, the course
gave me clear advice on how to set up a business plan and handle the legal requirements of records, including
money, tax and the GST.
“On completion I was also able to recognise the networks I already had and set up valuable contacts with other
people who have done this course. Highly recommended!!"
- Patricia Davidson, fibre artist and teacher.
(OK, she is Monica's mum, but trust us -
she wouldn't say these things if she didn't mean it. Thanks Mum!)
"Monica understands the creative mind.  Within Freelance Success I have learnt concepts and systems which
suddenly make the 'money management' side of my business more streamlined and much simpler.  I feel
organised and empowered about a part of my life which previously worried me and with the
Freelance Success
systems in place I am now able to spend more time concentrating on what I am really good at!"
